About the Girl Scout Cookie Program

This year’s cookie sale begins January 8, 2014. The Cookie Sale is a GSCV sponsored program that enables Girl Scout troops to earn funds during their Girl Scout Year to use towards making the world a better place. Girls have the opportunity to grow their skills of goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics through product sales. This year's theme, "I’ll Show You H.O.W. (Her Own Way)", is aimed at helping girls grow in these 5 key areas.  

Once a year, Girl Scouts around the country venture into the entrepreneurial world to learn business and financial skills and earn money to fund their Girl Scouting goals. Through “learning by earning,” Girl Scouting aims to empower girls through the development of five essential skills:

  1. Goal Setting: Girl Scouts set cookie goals individually and, with their team, create a plan to reach them. Girls develop Cooperation and Team Building skills all along the way. This matters because girls need to know how to set and reach goals to succeed in school, on the job, and in life.
  2. Decision Making: Girl Scouts decide where and when to sell cookies, how to market their sale, and what to do with their earnings, furthering the Critical Thinking and Problem Solving skill that will help them in many aspects of her life. This matters because girls must make many decisions, big and small, in their lives. Learning this skill helps them make good ones.
  3. Money Management: Girl Scouts develop a budget, take cookie orders, and handle customers’ money, gaining valuable and Practical Life Skills around financial literacy. This matters because girls need to know how to handle money – from their lunch money to their allowance to (someday) their paycheck.
  4. People Skills: Girl Scouts learn how to talk (and listen!) to their customers, as well as learning how to work as a team with other girls. These experiences help them to develop Healthy Relationships and Conflict Resolution skills that they can use throughout their lives. This matters because it will help them do better in school (on group projects, on sports teams, and on the playground) and, later, at work.
  5. Business Ethics: Girl Scouts act honestly and responsibly during every step of the cookie sale. Their business ethics reinforce the Positive Values they are developing as Girl Scouts. This matters because employers want to hire ethical employees – and the world needs ethical leaders in every field.

Girl Scout Cookie Craze 2014

Girl Scout Cookie Craze is the annual kick-off event for the world’s largest girl-led business – Girl Scout Cookies! Cookie Craze is a night where Girl Scouts and our famous cookies are put in the spotlight. This event brings together Girl Scouts, families, friends and Girl Scout cookie lovers to celebrate girl power. Girl Scouts will focus on building skills around goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, to success, and to life.

Girls Scouts will have a special opportunity to attend Cookie Academy. Cookie Academy is an exclusive Girl Scout opportunity from 2:00-4:00 p.m. This free members only portion of Cookie Craze requires a separate registration through COMAR.

We know our Girl Scouts are smart cookies but we also know they like to play! So after all the goal setting is done and sales techniques are learned, we will all play!  Cookie Craze will feature over 100,000 square feet of off the chart, family-friendly fun for all ages! We end our night rocking out with a live concert by X-Factor Finalists and girl super group Fifth Harmony!

 

 

The CookiesClusterCookies

GSCV sells the “Super Six” cookies: Samoas®, Thin Mints, Tagalongs®, Do-si-dos®, Trefoils, and Savannah Smiles. This year, cookies will sell for $4.00 per box, which is an increase of $.25 per box from years past and the first increase to the public in five years. This increase was necessary due in part to the increase in cost of ingredients needed to create the cookies.

About Little Brownie Bakers

Little Brownie Bakers has been baking Girl Scout Cookies® for over 35 years. They are licensed by Girl Scouts® of the USA to provide eight varieties of cookies for the annual Cookie Sale including: Samoas®, Thin Mints, Tagalongs®, Do-si-dos®, and Trefoils.

Their mission is to provide cookies and support services of the highest quality to Girl Scout Councils so that the annual Cookie Activity helps build a wide range of life skills for girls and generates income for troops and councils. Through their daily actions, they demonstrate their commitment to the principles of quality, integrity, respectfulness and innovation

 

Goal Setting Activities

Setting goals is the key to a successful sale. Troops and girls who set goals earn big. Talk about what your plans are for the cookie sale and what funding would be needed to make it happen. Give your girls the opportunity to fully experience Product Sale Programming and don’t skip the Goal Setting and Decision Making skill building!  Our council-wide goal this year is 1.4 million boxes of cookies. What will your goal be?

 

Volunteer Cookie Training

New leaders must take cookie training in person and those are available at the times and locations listed here. Also included are grCookies101eat FAQs to help you Be Prepared for the 2014 Cookie Sale Program. However, ANYONE is welcome to attend any of the in person trainings. NEW this year...experienced leaders can take cookie training online! Click here for the online training.

Cookie packets will only be given to 01 leaders who have successfully completed training (in person/online), have no outstanding balance from previous product sales and have a current Leader Financial Responsibility Agreement form on file. Booth sale reservations are underway! Please submit your Booth Sale Reservation Form online here. Once your form is submitted, your booth sale location will be uploaded for you into Cookie Locator for people to find you and your cookies!

 

Operation Appreciation

GiftofCaringBoxOnWorldGirl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia has partnered with the Central Virginia USO for the 2013-14 Girl Scout membership year for the first ever council-wide Operation Appreciation.

Our goal this year is to donate 3,500 cases (42,000 boxes) of cookies from this year's cookie sale. To make things easier on you, we are going to handle the transportation and delivery to the USO. A presentation of all the cookies donated through Operation Appreciation will occur at the Richmond International Airport on a date to be determined once the Cookie Sale ends in March. We hope you will be able to join us as we spread joy to the men and women who serve our country by letting them know we care.

We believe that Operation Appreciation will give Girl Scouts the opportunity to see how their hard work and dedication to Girl Scouting makes the world a better place, one soldier at a time. Won't you join us?

 

If your troop is participating in the Gift of Caring program by donating to another organization other than the USO, please fill out our form and receive a downloadable certificate of achievement for your girls.

Q: When did Girl Scouts first start selling cookies?

A: Long before Girl Scouts contracted with commercial bakers, Girl Scout cookies were baked in family kitchens, with mothers volunteering as technical advisers to their daughters. The earliest written mention of a cookie sale was that of the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, which baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project in December 1917.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program has been in existence for over 90 years. The first Girl Scout council sale of commercially baked Girl Scout cookies was in Philadelphia in 1934. In 1936, Girl Scouts of the USA licensed the first commercial baker. In 2006-2007 there were two bakers licensed to produce and distribute Girl Scout cookies.

 

Q: Who decides what cookies to sell?

A: Girl Scout cookies are sold at the local level. Volunteer boards of directors for each local council:

1.Choose the baker.

2.Determine the price per box.

3.Set the dates for their local cookie activities.

4.Decide how much of the cookie proceeds will be retained by or returned to troops/groups selling cookies for their projects and activities.

5.Decide how Girl Scout cookie revenue will be used by the council to provide vital services, such as leader recruitment and training and operation of camps and service centers, and other indirect expenses that each contribute to a high-quality Girl Scout experience.

 

Q: Where does the money earned from selling cookies go?

A: All of the revenue — every penny after paying the baker — remains in the area where the cookies are sold and directly or indirectly benefits Girl Scouts in those local communities. Girl Scout cookie proceeds are used for many purposes, including maintaining campsites and providing travel financial assistance for girls; providing leadership development for adult volunteers; and providing support for special membership initiatives such as Girl Scout troops in homeless shelters, detention centers, and migrant communities. The allocation of Girl Scout cookie revenue to individual troops/groups and “cookie dough” for individual girls to apply to such activities as camp or event fees is handled at the council level. At the Girl Scout troop level, the girls vote on how to spend the money they’ve earned. Examples include special trips to museums or exhibitions, overnight stays at camp and community service projects.

 

Q: Who sells Girl Scout Cookies?

A: Selling Girl Scout cookies is a voluntary activity. Every girl who participates must provide written parental/guardian consent and receives information and training about her council’s Girl Scout Cookie Program.

About The Fall Product Program

This year's Fall Product Program began September 16, 2013. The Fall Product Sale is a GSCV sponsored program that enables Girl Scout troops to earn funds at the beginning of their Girl Scout Year to use towards making the world a better place. Girls have the opportunity to grow their skills of goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics through product sales. This year's theme, "Be Your Best You!", is aimed at helping girls grow in these 5 key areas.  

 

There are many great new things happening this year during the Fall Product Sale from our new vendor, Ashdon Farms/QSP to bigger and better recognitions for the girls we have revamped the entire program and we are excited to see girls grow in their five skills while having lots of fun along the way. Goal Setting Activities

Give your girls the opportunity to fully experience Product Sale Programming and don’t skip the Goal Setting and Decision Making skill building!  Fall Product isn’t as simple as saying “sell 350 boxes of cookies” since the product line is varied. But by leveraging all product options, the girls can discover, connect and take action to meet their troop’s funding needs.

 

Be a Goal Getter!

The initial orders are in! Between October 11th and November 2nd, any Girl Scout participating in the Fall Product Sale who sells either 15 nut/candy items or 3 ONLINE magazine subscriptions will be eligible for our goal getter incentive! The Central Virginia USO

Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia has partnered with the Central Virginia USO for the 2013-14 Girl Scout membership year for the first ever council-wide Operation Appreciation.

Our goal this year is to donate 5,000 cans of nuts from this year's fall product sale. To make things easier on you, we are going to handle the transportation and delivery to the USO. A presentation of all the nuts donated through Operation Appreciation will occur at the Richmond International Airport on a date to be determined once the Fall Product Sale ends in November. We hope you will be able to join us as we spread joy to the men and women who serve our country by letting them know we care.

Troop Resources

The Fall Product Sale Program is managed in the Nut-e web based system by Troop, Service Unit and Association volunteers. It is also the system used by council to order product as well as rewards. The Service Unit Fall Product Chair will be sure the troop is provided login information. Registered girls names will be uploaded prior to the sale start date though newly registered girls can be easily added as they join your troop.  Use the links below for the Troop Nut-e User manual (which is also accessible from within the system) and the web link address for Nut-e.
